Is Massage Good For Knee Pain?

Is Massage good for knee pain? Have a look below to find out!

Massage is a quick way to deal with acute knee pain that does not arise from a some sort of impact injury or an injury that effects the structural components of the joint itself. There are many factors that can cause knee pain.

Knee pain typically shows up with associated tightness and/or weakness in the hips and quads. Humans are quad dominant by nature. Oftentimes forced into positions creating tightness in the glutes and placing the quads in a shortened position as we sit. Muscles that are tight or placed into a shortened position quite some time often lose their ability to fully contract. A muscles ability to fully contract or not correlates with the strength and weaknesses of that muscle.

How can massage be good for tightened muscles which can lead to knee pain?

Well through a variety of general Swedish massage techniques, trigger point therapy, passive stretching and neuromuscular techniques. Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) can change the orientation of the effected muscles and place them into an optimal position.

Oftentimes with tightness in the quads it can create a pulling force on the knee creating some abnormal irritations on the joint itself. Also, trigger point pain in the quad muscles can cause a referred pain response which can mimic knee pain. RMTs can apply specific pressures on trigger points in muscles to eliminate the referred knee pain if associated.

Knee pain is a very common complaint of humans who do not move well through their hips, experience lower back pain, or are desk workers with poor posture. RMTs have the ability to provide education and effect the common soft tissue components that contribute to muscular related knee pain that occurs most commonly with movement.
