Sports Massage

Athletic Performance & Recovery Support in Calgary, AB

Whether you’re training for a race, lifting heavy, or just staying active, a Sports Massage helps your body recover faster, move better, and stay injury-free.

At MYo Lab, our Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) do just that: helping athletes at all levels prepare for training, competition, and recovery. We look at how your sport, training style, and daily demands impact specific joints, muscle groups, tendons, and soft tissues. Rather than “just working the tight spots,” our RMTs use targeted techniques to activate underused muscles, release overworked ones, and support the movement patterns you rely on, whether you’re a runner, lifter, cyclist, weekend rec-leaguer, or someone who simply trains to stay healthy and strong.

You don’t need to be a competitive athlete to benefit. If you’re active for stress relief, longevity, or general wellness, the same principles still apply: treat tension early, keep tissues mobile, and help your body recover so you can keep doing what you love, injury-free.

What Our Calgary Patients Are Saying

Always a great experience at this clinic. Dr. Shelly Bouvier is professional, caring, and really takes the time to help. My previous chiropractor was also excellent. The front desk staff are friendly and efficient, and the massage therapists here are amazing — skilled and attentive. Highly recommend!

Anton K.

I’ve just started coming to MYo and I’m very impressed with everyone I’ve dealt with. Shelley my chiropractor has been great and Ryan the massage therapist was terrific. I also really appreciate the friendly front office team: shout out to Anika and Tash for the good vibes.

John J.

I have been going to Myolab for a few weeks and highly recommend it to everyone.
I’ve been seeing Evan as my chiropractor and Zack as my massage therapist, who are “amazing”.
I’m very impressed with the treatment plan they have provided and the care I have received. I am looking forward to physio to maintain my health in 2022.

Marlene P.

I am a active cyclist who was looking for a new physiotherapy. I ended up finding not only a new physiotherapy also a massage therapist, chiropractor and soon I’ll start with the dietitian.
Myo lab works together to get you the best care possible for you. They have helped me get better and get stronger. Any small issues I have now can be fixed with one or two visits as they fixed my big issues. They have helped me get to the race line pain free!

Charlotte H.

Your body deserves care that goes deeper than surface-level relief.

Common FAQs About Sports Massage

What Is Registered Massage Therapy?

Registered Massage Therapy involves hands-on treatment of the muscles, fascia, and other soft tissues of the body. At MYo Lab, our RMTs are trained professionals regulated by the College of Massage Therapists of Alberta. They use evidence-based techniques to help with pain relief, recovery, and overall movement.

What does the sports massage include?

Your sports massage may include stretching, joint mobilization, deep tissue work, or movement-based techniques, all customized to your goals and what your body needs that day.

Will a sports massage be uncomfortable?

Sports massage can involve deeper work in certain areas, but it shouldn’t be painful—unless you have a prior condition or an injury that we’re addressing, in which case it might be a bit uncomfortable in the beginning. Otherwise, you may feel pressure or mild discomfort in tight muscles, but your RMT will always adjust the pressure based on your feedback.

Will I be sore afterward?

Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal, especially if deeper techniques were used. Gentle movement, hydration, and rest will tremendously help ease post-treatment tenderness.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on a lot of variables like the extent of your injury (if any), your fitness goals, training load, etc. Many athletes start with a short series (3–5 sessions) for mobility and recovery, then shift into maintenance every 2–4 weeks. It’s best to discuss this with your RMT during your first or second session to get a clearer understanding.

What should I wear to the massage appointment?

Whatever makes you comfortable. You can undress to your comfort level or wear loose-fitting clothing. You’ll always be covered with a sheet during the session, and your RMT will only uncover the area being treated.

What other treatments are offered at MYo Lab?

We offer a range of therapeutic treatments under one roof, including:

Our multidisciplinary approach means your care team works together to support your recovery, movement, and overall wellness.

Do I need a doctor's referral for Massage therapy?

If a “doctor’s note” is required, our Chiropractors may fit that requirement. However, if a “Physician’s note” is required, you will need to see a medical doctor. If submitting to insurance, we encourage you to check with your specific provider to see if a note is needed and from which profession(s) they accept one.

Can I combine Sports Massage with Chiropractic or Physiotherapy?

Yes, and it’s one of our specialties. Your RMT will most likely collaborate with our Chiropractic or Physiotherapy team when additional care would support your recovery or training progress.
