Expected Recovery From Whiplash

This blog post is about expected recovery from whiplash.

Whiplash is a common injury when it comes to motor vehicle accidents, but what is it?

Whiplash is a more specific term to describe a strain/sprain injury in the area of the neck. This means that the tissues in the area have undergone some micro-tears, they have stretched too far. When breaking it down, sprains indicate ligament damage, strains indicate muscle damaged – often with a whiplash injury it involves both.

In regards to the expected recovery from whiplash, it depends on the extent of the injury, of course. Expect upwards of 8 weeks for a standard case, with a more intense injury potentially being longer, and a more subtle one shorter.

After a whiplash type injury, the muscles around the area tighten up. This is a protective mechanism from the brain to try to guard around the irritated tissue. This guarding will limit mobility in an attempt to prevent further damage to the tissue. The focus of the initial phase of care is on addressing mobility restrictions for these injuries.

It is important to rehab the injured tissue as the mobility is improved. Without performing specific rehab, the muscles are left susceptible and the strength likely hasn’t been restored. Utilizing exercises during this period will help with strength, endurance and the overall motor pattern which will help the body in the recovery process.
