Men Have a Pelvic Floor Too: Understanding and Addressing Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Men

When speaking of the pelvic floor, it is typically in relation to women, which ignores half the population. That stops today. Men have a pelvic floor too!

Like nearly every other muscle in the body, men and women both have a group of muscles known as the pelvic floor. Where there are muscles, there can be dysfunction.

The Role of the Pelvic Floor in Men’s Health

The pelvic floor is a critical part of the core musculature. It needs to contract and relax to create the intra-abdominal pressure that stabilizes and supports the low back. When it doesn’t function correctly, back pain can start, among other complaints.

Signs and Symptoms of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Men

So, in men specifically, how can pelvic floor dysfunction manifest?

Common symptoms include low back pain, pelvic or tailbone pain, groin pain, urinary frequency or incontinence, painful urination, difficulty initiating a urine stream, and erectile dysfunction or pain associated with ejaculation.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Here’s the catch: there could be other reasons for these symptoms that are incredibly serious. Definitely speak to a medical doctor if experiencing them. It’s important to break through the stigma associated with these symptoms to get the care you need.

How Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Can Help

As tests come back negative and the ‘scary’ causes of pelvic pain or dysfunction are eliminated, enter pelvic floor therapy. This, admittedly, is also uncomfortable and stigmatized. But it shouldn’t be. These are muscles like any other, and if you can get treatment for sore pecs from too many bench presses, then you can get treatment for your pelvic floor too. Pelvic floor dysfunction isn’t something you have to just live with.
