Want to know what is the main cause of tension headaches? Keep reading below to identify some of the main triggers.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache, occurring with slightly increased frequency in females. There is no one true “cause” of tension headaches. Rather, this most common type of headache has several “triggers” which can include:

  • Tense face, neck, and upper shoulder muscles
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Long hours at the computer and desk
  • Eye strain
  • Holding head/neck/shoulders in certain positions for extended periods of time
  • Diet and consumption of alcohol, caffeine, or withdrawal from either
  • Smoking
  • Illness – colds, flu, sinus infection can all contribute
  • Lack of sleep or sleep pattern disturbances such as sleeping in one position for too long, or sleeping in a cold room

Try this stretch if experiencing a tension headache:

Tension headaches sometimes happen with other types of headaches, such as cluster or migraine. If tension headaches are being experienced more than twice a week, or tension headaches are disrupting day-to-day life, please see a doctor. Additionally if the pattern of headaches changes, the severity, frequency or feel of tension headache changes, seek medical care. If experiencing a sudden, abrupt, sharp headache; if the headache is accompanied by nausea, fever, stiff neck, mental confusion, disorientation, speech impairment, vision impairment, dizziness or numbness anywhere in the body; or if a headache happens after an injury that is worsening, please seek emergent medical attention.
