What Is Cupping In Massage Therapy?

Sometimes we get the question from members, what is cupping in Massage Therapy and why is my Massage Therapist using it?

Cupping in Massage Therapy is a process where silicone, glass, or plastic cups that suction onto the skin are used as part of a therapeutic treatment. They are used to create blood flow and reduce restriction in different layers of tissue. It’s also important to note that they can be suctioned on at different intensities based on the members preference!

What are the marks left on the skin? The marks that are left on the skin after cupping are due to stagnation of blood and restriction in the area. If the mark leaves a lighter mark than the skin (blanching), this can mean that there is a lack of blood flow to the area. The cups will then ultimately draw blood to the affected area, creating a faster healing process.

What should you expect after getting cupping? Relief from your areas of pain and discomfort and muscle soreness.

Can you do it on your own? It is required that RMTs take a continuing education course to perform cupping, therefore we encourage people to see a professional for cupping therapy to ensure safe and effective practice. Click here to book in with one of our RMTs who specialize in cupping.
