What Does A Stress Anxiety Headache Feel Like?

What does a stress anxiety headache feel like? This blog post will outline the different types of headaches that may be experienced.

The most common types of headaches (including tension, migraines, and cluster) all have some links to stress and anxiety. Depending on which type of headache is being dealt with, the anxiety headache will feel different.

Tension headaches – Are the most common, and usually feels like mild to moderate pain or tightness around the head. The pain can last hours or days and doesn’t get worse with physical activity. They can be triggered by anxiety but it is unclear exactly why this might happen.

Migraines – Are more intense headaches that are usually sharp, intense, and pounding or throbbing. The pain may be more focused than a tension headache. These can last hours to days and usually include nausea and sensitivity to light and noise. People with anxiety disorders commonly experience migraines.

Cluster headaches – Are the least common type. The pain is very intense and usually described as a burning or piercing pain, usually behind the eyes. They may happen a few times a day, each attack lasting from 15 minutes to several hours. Other symptoms that may be experienced are watery eyes, a runny nose, and/or a sweaty face.

If experiencing headaches, it is important to discuss both the headache symptoms and any feelings of stress or anxiety with a doctor to receive the most optimal care.
