Tension headaches can start slowly and build up to a sensation that is akin to a “band” tightening around the forehead, with a dull ache behind the eyes. Tension headaches are not usually severe enough to prevent performing day to day activities and tasks.
Commonly, tension headaches start slowly and stem from tension. This tension is typically in the upper back muscles, the neck muscles, or in tightening of the jaw muscles. Usually, sufferers will report all three contributing factors when they experience a tension headache.
These types of headaches can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several days. If a tension headache has been experienced for 15 of 30 days, for minimum three months, it is considered chronic.
