What Is The Reason For Neck Pain?

What is the reason for neck pain? Let’s unpack that!

Neck pain can arise from a variety of factors including movement pattern dysfunctions, vehicle accidents contributing to whiplash, concussions, etc. Neck pain can be muscular related, joint related, or both. The neck is integral to daily living and consists of many components from joints and muscles to the nervous system.

Movement pattern dysfunctions or lack thereof are the most common issues viewed by clinicians in practice. With many different movements in the neck requiring the use of a variety of different muscles, improper movement is often the case through each individual muscle group. All muscles attach to bones which create joints. Therefore, when moving as improperly joint and/or muscular issues in the neck are often created. Long daily repetitive movements such as sleeping or looking at phones can put repetitive stress on the neck, creating pain!

Whiplash is an injury caused by forceful back & forth whipping of the neck due to impact or sudden unexpected movements. Most often people experience whiplash from vehicle accidents which cause a certain jerking movement of the head and neck. Symptoms of whiplash include limited range of motion through the cervical spine, headaches/migraines, numbness/tingling in the hands, dizziness or blurred vision. There’s varying diagnosis of whiplash based on the symptomology. This is also known as WAD (Whiplash Associated Disorders), and ranges from level 1 (least severe) to 5 (most severe).

Concussions much like whiplash can be caused by a blow to the head. Thus creating a jerking movement of the head and neck, leading to movement of the brain within the skull. Did you know that every concussion is associated with whiplash but not every whiplash injury also has a concussion? Symptoms of a concussion can vary based on the impact or history. However, common symptoms include; headaches, nausea, balance issues, blurred vision, confusion, sensitivity to light/noise, etc.

The above examples are a commonly reasons why people experience neck pain. Movement pattern issues often arise out of nowhere, whereas whiplash and concussions are more so caused by an accident/injury.
