16 Aug How Long Does It Take To Strengthen The Pelvic Floor?
Want to know how long it takes to strengthen the pelvic floor? Keep reading to learn more!
The pelvic floor is made up of a group of muscles. Therefore it can be thought about the same as any other group of muscles in the body!
When beginning a new training regimen, the first 6 weeks are largely neuromuscular changes (the body adapts and becomes more efficient at that particular physical demand). After those six weeks, the increases in strength are due to the muscle tissue changing. The pelvic floor is no different! Most people should expect to see some difference within the first six weeks (if following through on the exercise homework)!
An important thing to note is that unlike other muscle groups, it is not very easy to know exactly what is happening with the pelvic floor. It might seem like it needs strengthening, however the cause of dysfunction can be not knowing how to relax it.
Everyone is different, but one of the most valuable things is being able to connect and control the pelvic floor. A fantastic goal is to learn how to relax and contract the pelvic floor at will. Once full control over the motion of the pelvic floor is achieved, then strengthening can be useful to improve function.
Wanting to learn how to do this, or if unsure if it is being done correctly? A Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist is a great place to start.
