Is It Normal To Have A Painful Period?

You may ask yourself, is it normal to have a painful period?

This news may be somewhat upsetting and extremely surprising. Are you ready? Your periods are not supposed to be painful.

Those cramps that keep you from going to school or work are not supposed to be a thing. That low back and abdominal discomfort that is a regular occurrence during that time of the month SHOULD NOT BE A THING.

Technically, we’re talking about dysmenorrhea or “painful periods” which most people who have heard of that condition associate with severe pain, but it actually applies to any pain. Even mild pain. Is your mind blown? Ours was.

This could send us down a rabbit hole about the patriarchy regarding women’s health and medicine, but instead we will just say that if you have painful periods, that is common but not normal. We need to start teaching young girls and women that experiencing pain during that time of the month is not normal and they do NOT have to accept it! Let’s spread the word and help them feel better.

If you have any questions, or want to learn more about what you can do when you have painful cramps, make an appointment with our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist Lydia.
