How Do You Know If Your Pelvic Floor Is Healthy?

How do you know if your pelvic floor is healthy?

Most people don’t even know about their pelvic floor, never mind think about it! So if you’ve been wondering if your pelvic floor is healthy or not, let us shed some light on things.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can present in many ways, but there are three major things to be aware of that would indicate that something might be wrong with your pelvic floor muscles: (1) pain, (2) peeing, and (3) prolapse.

Pain: This can present in numerous ways: abdominal, low back, hip, and pelvic pain are all common areas of complaint. Pain that is present during or after intercourse can also indicated pelvic floor dysfunction. And of course, any vulvar or penile pain is an indication that you may benefit from a pelvic floor exam.

Peeing: This refers to incontinence symptoms. Incontinence is the inability to control urination (peeing) or defecation (pooping). Common types are stress incontinence (leaking when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jump, or run) and urgency incontinence (a sudden urge to go when you hear running water, get in the shower, or put your key in the door). While incontinence is common for many people (especially new mothers), it is not normal.

Prolapse: This is when your internal organs are lacking support from your pelvic floor and they descend or “droop.” There are different grades of prolapse depending on the severity. If you notice bulging or a feeling of heaviness in your pelvic region, that may indicate you have a pelvic organ prolapse and would benefit from an exam.
