When Should You Be Concerned About A Headache?

When should you be concerned about a headache?

Headaches are a common occurrence for most of our population. In fact, 7.2 billion people will experience a headache in their lifetime. As with any condition there are numerous causative agents that may be the root cause of your headache – or it may be an amalgamation of many.

These causative agents may include dehydration, chronic stress, poor posture, uncontrolled hypertension, and even hypertonic muscles within the head/neck. But when do these common headaches become a cause for concern?

Some areas to be aware of when a headache should be brought up to a medical professional include:

· Describing the headache as ‘the worst headache you’ve ever had’

· A major change in the pattern of your headaches – such as more frequent and more intense

· Head pain that increases with coughing or movement

· Headaches that prevent normal daily activities or wake you up during the night

Immediate attention is needed when:

· A headache that is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, decreased alertness/memory, or neurological symptoms (such as visual disturbances, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or seizures)

· A headache that is described as intense pain in or around one eye, this is known as a cluster headache and may occur in cyclic patterns, the individual may experience tearing or forehead sweating on the affected side, the pain can often radiate to the jaw – causing jaw pain

Headaches can affect individuals in different capacities – and whether big or small mentioning the occurrence and intensity of these headaches can play a major role in your healthcare and getting to the root cause of the problem. Lifestyle changes can make a major impact on the frequency and intensity of any headache.
