What Happens When You Get A Concussion?

What happens when you get a concussion?

A concussion is a mild brain injury in which an acceleration/deceleration force is applied to the brain, in which can be from a direct hit to the head, or a hit to the body resulting in the impact being transmitted to the head. This quick acceleration/deceleration causes a stretch to the cells in the brain, which will begin to fire eventually causing an energy deficiency.

A concussion follows a series of phases:

(Phase 1) Acceleration/Deceleration Force

(Phase 2) Excitatory Phase

(Phase 3) Spreading Depression

(Phase 4) Gradual Return

After the initial injury (Phase 1), the cells go through an excitatory phase (Phase 2) meaning they randomly fire, which is why many individuals in this stage are confused and disoriented. Due to the firing of neurons, this eventually creates an energy deficiency, which is called the spreading depression phase (Phase 3).

Many people will be asymptomatic. The problem with relying on symptoms alone is this exposes individuals to a second impact as they often feel better prior to full recovery. With most injuries a second injury may be a minor setback, but the problem with a second impact during the recovery of a concussion is it can create a cumulative effect. This cumulative effect can create a much longer symptom course or even be permanent in very extreme cases.

Every concussion is unique, and because of this it is important to be managed properly. If you have sustained a concussion, be sure to be seen by a trained health professional as quickly as possible. MYo Lab is proud to have numerous Practitioners who have been trained through Complete Concussions. They will be able to take you through a thorough assessment, give you activity modifications (whether be exercise/work related) and determine where the necessary focus of your treatment should be (Phase 4).

The necessary areas of focus for your treatment can include:

• Neck (whiplash focus)

• Visual System

• Vestibular System (inner ear)

• Exercise

• Nutrition

• Education
