If you’re hypermobile and you’ve tried strength training, someone has probably asked you: “do you feel that in your glutes?” and you genuinely have no idea.

“I don’t know” is one of the most common things we hear. It’s not that the exercises are too hard, but people can’t tell what’s happening. 

They don’t know where the movement should stop, or they can’t tell if their muscles are working or not.

You’re not doing anything wrong. Your body is giving you less feedback than it actually needs.

Why doesn’t strength training feel “right” when you’re hypermobile?

It comes down to proprioception. Your body’s ability to sense where your joints are in space. Research shows that hypermobile people often are less accurate at sensing joint position.

Your connective tissue is more lax, so the signals it sends to your brain are fuzzier. Your brain gets a blurry map instead of a sharp one. You can DO the exercise, but you don’t know WHAT you’re doing.

Now imagine you start lifting heavier, because you can. This can actually make things worse because it adds load to a system that doesn’t know where it is.

What does hypermobile lifting actually look like?

Usually, we see one of a few patterns:

  1. Hitting full depth without earning it. Sure, you can sit all the way down in a squat. But your joints just went there because they could. Depth without control isn’t flexibility. It’s a vulnerability.
  2. Moving too fast to notice your body. Speed hides instability. You feel fine during the workout. Three hours later, you’re flared and regretting every decision you’ve made.
  3. Stretching constantly, but it never sticks. In hypermobility, tightness is often a stability strategy. Your muscles are gripping because your joints aren’t giving the brain enough information to feel safe. You stretch, they tighten, the cycle repeats.
  4. Locking out joints to “rest” between reps. Knees snapped so straight they’re almost backward. It feels stable, but you’re hanging on ligaments instead of using muscle.

How should hypermobile people exercise?

The goal is to train in a way that gives your body better information. Try these things:

Slow down. A 3-second lower, a brief pause, and a controlled lift forces your brain to pay attention. Try this with a goblet squat and you’ll notice things you’ve never felt before.

Use isometric holds. Wall sits, split squat holds, side planks. Holding still removes the complexity of movement and lets you focus on one question: Where do I feel this right now?

Prioritize closed-chain exercises. Squats, lunges, step-ups, bridges. When your hands or feet are fixed to a surface, your brain gets more sensory feedback from the ground. That helps fill in the proprioceptive gaps so you can activate the right muscles

Borrow feedback from the outside. A resistance band around your knees during a squat gives you something to push into and suddenly you can feel your glutes! A hand on your quad during a step-up reminds your brain where that muscle is. A mirror shows you whether your shoulder is actually where you think it is.

Stay in the mid-range until you earn the end-range. If you can pause at any point in a rep and hold for 3 seconds without shifting, you own that range. If you can’t, you’ve gone too far for now.

How do you know if you need a musculoskeletal assessment?

If you feel unstable during lifts, keep getting recurring strains, flare up after workouts, or genuinely can’t tell what muscles are working, it might be time to stop guessing.
