Low-Level Laser Therapy

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)—also referred to as Cold Laser Therapy—uses low-intensity light to promote healing and tissue repair without generating any heat. The technique is consequently called “cold” laser therapy because the low levels of light aren’t enough to heat your body’s tissue. The level of light is a non-invasive light source treatment that generates a single wavelength of light that emits no heat, sound, or vibration.

At MYo Lab, our Chiropractors are trained to use LLLT to treat various musculoskeletal conditions to help you manage pain, promote healing, and improve mobility.

Basically, specific wavelengths of light interact with tissues to help accelerate the healing process. It’s an effective treatment for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, helping relieve pain, reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, and improve overall function and mobility.

How Does LLLT Actually Work?

LLLT works by delivering specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to targeted tissues. These wavelengths—typically ranging from 632 to 904 nanometers—penetrate the skin without causing any heat, sound, or vibration.

Once absorbed by the body, this light stimulates a cellular response in fibroblasts (the cells responsible for connective tissue repair), promoting regeneration, reducing inflammation, and enhancing circulation. Essentially, the light energy triggers the body’s natural healing processes at a cellular level.

During treatment, the laser device is applied directly to the area of concern. While you may feel the device against your skin, the procedure is completely noninvasive and pain-free. There’s no discomfort, no downtime, and no need for anesthesia.

Each session usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes, depending on the condition and the area being treated. While session results vary, most benefit have to go through a few sessions to achieve lasting results.

How Physiotherapy Helps with Arthritis

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Our process is simple and straightforward. Here’s what happens during your LLLT appointment:

Consultation

The first step is getting your complete history. We want to know about previous injuries, pain, etc.

Examine the injury

We will then inspect the injury in question. At this point, we want to determine the best course of treatment—be it LLLT or a combination of therapies—that will expedite your recovery and keep you moving long-term.

Treatment

Our practitioner begins the treatment. During your session, you will be comfortably positioned while a handheld device is applied to the treatment area. This is completely pain-free and comfortable. If you do feel anything, it may just be a warm sensation related to the subsequent circulation/blood flow improvements. Each session typically lasts between 5-15 minutes.

Post-treatment advice

We then talk follow-ups and provide you with a detailed guide on rehabilitation exercises that you can perform at home to speed up your healing.

“I first came into MYo Lab because of ongoing mobility issues with my ankle and hips. After undergoing ankle surgery at a young age, I continued to experience pain and discomfort whenever I exercised or played basketball. Despite several attempts over the years to improve my condition, the pain never fully went away. When I recently took up running and a more active lifestyle, the ankle issues became even worse forcing me to stop running altogether and even making walking uncomfortable. During my treatment, Evan referred me to shockwave/ cold laser therapy. I’ll admit I was skeptical at first, but the results were remarkable. From the beginning, the staff made me feel comfortable and provided a clear, well explained breakdown of my treatment plan, ensuring it worked with my schedule. After just six sessions, I noticed significant improvement, and by the end of the treatment plan, the pain I had lived with for years was gone. For the first time since childhood, I am almost 100% pain free and able to run, exercise and do many of the activities I enjoy without my body breaking down. Shockwave/cold laser therapy has truly been life changing for me and I am deeply grateful for the care and expertise provided by the MYo Lab team.”
