Why Did I Become A Chiropractor?

One of our Chiropractors, Dr. Shelly Bouvier answers the question: why did I become a Chiropractor?

Choosing a career is a much larger task than most people realize. I began dancing at a very young age which came with numerous injuries growing up. At the age of 9 my parents took me to the chiropractor for the first time due to an injured low back which was essentially hindering my ability to dance. This was my first experience with a chiropractor that I remember vividly. Due to my injured back I was seeing the chiropractor 2-3x/week doing soft tissue modalities as well as adjustments to get my body back to where it needed to be as not only as a dancer but a young child. I continued to see the Chiropractor for wellness visits throughout my entire childhood.

When I was in high school and starting to think about what I wanted to do in university and essentially my career after – I knew I wanted it to encompass the medical field – but not push pharmaceuticals but much rather the homeopathic route of health care. When talking with my teachers and parents it was a clear-cut choice that being a Chiropractor was at the forefront of all the options I had in my mind.

From there I applied to the University of Calgary for a Bachelor of Kinesiology. I knew this degree would leave numerous doors open after graduation had I changed my mind about chiropractic. I took the next 5 years to dive in deep to the different avenues of healthcare – physiotherapy, kinesiologist, physical education teacher, Chiropractor, strength and conditioning coach – the list could go on forever! Ultimately leading me back to Chiropractic. Researching different schools Palmer College of Chiropractic kept popping up (due to the fact they are the founders of Chiropractic!). After touring the school in my 3rd year of university it was clear that that’s where I needed to be and the path I wanted to go down.

Since graduating and starting my career, I could not have picked a more rewarding and fulfilling career.
