What Is A Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body.

It’s important to be aware that a concussion may occur even without any contact with the head! The impact causes dysfunction within brain cells and often decreases blood flow, resulting in temporary (typically) deficits in brain function.

If you’ve recently sustained an impact anywhere on your body that may have resulted in any neck and/or head symptoms, we urge you to book your Concussion Assessment as soon as possible, ideally within 48 hours, to ensure a proper diagnosis, care plan, and education are all provided to you so you can make an informed decision on your healthcare.

Imaging (i.e., x-ray, CT, etc.) or blood testing cannot effectively diagnose a concussion, so seeing a regulated healthcare practitioner with extra credentialing in concussion diagnosis and management is the optimal choice to ensure you are getting current, evidence-based information and plan of action.

Our Approach to Concussion Treatment

Following a concussion, it’s recommended you seek the care of a healthcare professional with training and experience with concussions as soon as possible.

In fact, recent studies have concluded that one of the best predictors of concussion recovery was how fast you were assessed at a concussion clinic. The earlier you seek quality concussion care, the better your recovery will be.

Generally, a period of relative “symptom-limited” physical and cognitive rest is recommended for the first 24-48 hours after sustaining a concussion. After this rest period, a gradual increase in mental and physical activity is recommended.

For optimal recovery, this process should be directed and supervised by a healthcare professional trained in concussion management. If symptoms of a concussion are still present after 7 to 10 days, an individualized treatment and rehabilitation program should be initiated.

As part of our Complete Concussions program, we offer a full suite of evidence-based concussion treatment services and strategies, including:

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Our process is simple. Here’s what happens during your first appointment:

1. Comprehensive Assessment: We’ll start with a detailed 60-minute evaluation of your medical history and current symptoms, including questions about your injury, any previous concussions as well as your medical history.

2. Baseline Testing: If you haven’t had one, and do not currently have a concussion, we’ll conduct a baseline test to measure your cognitive and physical function, helping us to more effectively diagnose and guide your recovery should you experience a concussion in the future. Due to changes in our brain, general body, and life, it’s important to update your baseline test every 365 days. Having a current baseline test can drastically improve your outcomes in case you experience a concussion.

3. Evidence-Based Treatment: During your appointment, you may receive treatment designed to alleviate symptoms and promote recovery. This could include manual therapy to relieve tension and restore function, neurological rehabilitation via exercises, acupuncture to improve blood flow and/or reduce pain, and therapeutic exercises to strengthen and restore balance.

4. Post-treatment advice: We’ll provide tips for managing your symptoms and information on when to safely return to activity. This will include physical or electronic handouts and education, as well as potentially nutritional, sleep, and lifestyle tips based on your specific situation.

At MYo Lab, we’re committed to providing you with the highest standard of care in concussion management. Our team is here to support you on your journey to recovery, ensuring you get back to doing what you love—safely and effectively.

Common FAQs About Concussion Management

Why is it important to seek care immediately after a concussion?

Seeking care immediately (ideally within 48 hours) after a concussion is crucial because early intervention can significantly improve your recovery. At MYo Lab, as part of our Complete Concussion Management program, we focus on providing the right assessments and treatments to help you safely return to learning, work, and play.

By seeking care right away, we can start a tailored recovery plan that may include:

  • Guided exercise therapy and a brief rest period after to support healing and restore proper function.
  • Manual therapy to treat common symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, balance issues, and poor blood circulation.
  • Vestibular rehabilitation and vision therapy to improve balance, coordination, and overall stability.
  • Diet and nutrition counselling emphasizes the importance of avoiding inflammatory foods that could aggravate symptoms.
  • Education to equip you with the knowledge and confidence needed to manage your recovery successfully.

The sooner you’re assessed, the better the chances of a full recovery. Early care ensures your symptoms are managed properly and reduces the risk of long-term complications.

How long will it take to recover from a concussion?

Recovery time varies for each individual. Generally, a period of symptom-limited rest is recommended for the first 24–48 hours, followed by a gradual return to activities.

Approximately 80 percent of people recover from their symptoms within 2 weeks, but some may experience symptoms for a longer duration, up to 6 weeks. It’s critical to assess and treat beyond the symptoms, ensuring a robust rehabilitation program to reduce the risk of post-concussive syndrome (PCS), if left unaddressed.

What happens when a concussion lasts longer than usual?

Typically, concussion symptoms go away within 2–6 weeks after the injury. When it lasts for months and sometimes a year, we refer to this as post-concussion syndrome or PCS

PCS symptoms are diverse and may affect how your body and brain function and how you process emotions, which is why it’s always important to immediately get help if you feel like your concussion symptoms are still persistent.

What treatments do you offer for concussions?

Can I return to sports or activities immediately after a concussion?

No. It’s essential to follow a gradual return-to-activity protocol under the supervision of a healthcare professional trained in concussion management. Returning too soon can lead to further and potentially life-threatening injury.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

At MYo Lab, we tailor concussion treatment to your unique needs. During your initial assessment, we’ll evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and any baseline testing you may have done. Based on this, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan that may include guided exercise therapy, manual therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, or nutrition counselling.

What if my symptoms persist after 2 weeks?

If symptoms continue beyond this timeframe, it’s important to initiate an individualized treatment and rehabilitation program. We’ll work with you to develop a plan that addresses your ongoing symptoms. Chances are, it will be important to start moving more, so we’ll professionally assess you to make this determination and clear recommendations.
