10 Things Your Massage Therapist Would Like You To Know!

Here are the 10 things your Massage Therapist would like you to know!

(1) UNDRESS to the level of your comfort! IF that means leaving clothes on, leave clothes on! IF that means fully undressed, do so! We drape to cover all tissue we are not working on, so you will never be exposed EVER.

(2) We have seen, heard, and smelt it all! Please DO NOT be embarrassed if a noise, smell or what have you, escapes the body. You are not the first or the last to do so! Also, HAIR IS NORMAL! Rock it or don’t, we don’t care!

(3) Falling asleep happens – it’s warm, cozy, and relaxing on the table – if a little snooze happens, we take it as a compliment!

(4) Your massage = YOUR PREFERENCE! If you want more pressure, less pressure, to modify, change or STOP a technique we are doing, PLEASE SAY SO! We are not mind or body readers and cannot feel the sensation you are experiencing! Massage should feel good and if it doesn’t, we need you to speak up.

(5) That being said, moments of intensity are normal. The parameters we go with: nothing should be a 7 or above/10 pain. Anything that makes you clench your fists or jaw, curl your toes, break out in a cold sweat, or hold your breath is too much and we should back off the pressure/depth.

(6) Depth does NOT equal pain. AGAIN, massage should feel good, and we are NOT here to “beat you up.”

(7) If you wanna chat, we can chat. If you want to zone out and be quiet, that’s a-okay with us, again YOUR MASSAGE, YOUR PREFERENCE. We will check in every now and again to ensure you’re comfortable, but we can catch up after!

(8) Members who have not had massage before, or if it has been a little while, may experience some post treatment tenderness – this should not last for more than a couple days and should not impede your daily activities. If you are experiencing post treatment soreness (delayed onset muscle soreness = DOMS) use contrast heat/cold and keep things moving! Some light stretches or range of motion activities can really help.

(9) Please let your Massage Therapist know that you experienced DOMS after your last treatment so we can adjust as necessary. Also, please reach out if these DOMS lasted more than a couple of days.

(10) The is NO judgement on the table. Things we discuss, see, hear, and perform are between us and in complete confidence and only shared with your permission to the other health care workers involved in your care plan.
